WHO ARE WE?

We are descendants of Ngati Porou that now live in Harataunga, a gift (or tuku) of whenua from Paora Te Putu (Tamatera) to his great friend Te Rakahurumai (Ngati Porou).

We have 3 buildings on our Marae: Rākairoa (Whare Tipuna), Ngaropi (Whare Kai), and Iri Te Kura (Whare Tawhito). The kawa on our Marae is paeke (our side speaks fully, then the manuhiri side speaks), which is followed by harirū and kai whakanoa.

BASIC TIKANGA

• Waewae tapu (people who’ve not visited the Marae before) must be greeted with a pohiri. Let us know if this is needed.

• No kai allowed in the Whare Tipuna.

• No muddy footwear in the Whare Kai.

• Drive slow! Tamariki and kaumatua around!

• Smoking permitted in the kauta only.

• No alcohol on Marae grounds.

• Marae buildings and grounds to be left clean and tidy on checkout.

WHAT TO BRING

• Blankets and pillows. We will provide mattresses and sheets for your stay. 

• Kai, rubbish bags, personal toiletries, dish soap.

• Kōrero to share with our ahi kaa whānau.

CLEANING OUR MARAE

The Marae is maintained by a voluntary group of ahi kaa whānau. Help our hapū by leaving the Marae clean and tidy on departure. 

See the Cleaning Checklist that you can use to make sure all the areas around the marae are cleaned and made ready for the next group.

We encourage groups to bring their own basic consumables like soap, shampoo and toothpaste. We will supply handwash, paper towels, and cleaning products. 

If any of our consumables need to be refilled or refreshed, please contact the Booking Agent.

IMPORTANT: Red cleaning gear is the only gear to be used in the toilets and showers and cannot be used anywhere else.  

CLEANING CHECKLIST

This checklist is a guide for leaving our Marae clean and tidy for the next group.

Upon departure you will have:

• Swept and mopped all floors in Wharekai

• Wiped and stacked all tables and chairs 

• Cleaned toilets, sinks and showers

• Cleaned and packed all dishes

• Cleaned up kāuta and out buildings

• Cleaned and vacuumed Whare Tipuna

• Left sheets and tea towels in laundry area

• Put recycling in appropriate bins

• Bagged non-recycled trash in rubbish bags

• Taken left over food and pig scraps away

• Closed and locked all windows and doors
